For students at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, creating exhibitions assumes a central position in their artistic practice. For the realisation of exhibitional, curatorial, interventionist art-science experiments, there is also a space at the Academy that can be occupied with in a variety of ways, that is clearly attributable to the Academy of Fine Arts, and that is nevertheless symbolically and representationally as non-prescribed as possible. This space enables a student at the Academy to have a self-determined exhibition practice without having to attend to institutional questions.
For this concept, it was possible in spring of 2012, together with LENIKUS, to find a space befitting of the artistic free space offering a contextualisation of experimental work in an artistic environment. At the Bauernmarkt in Vienna's 1st district, a group of students are conducting 2 multifunctional exhibition and event rooms called FRIDAY Exit:
FRIDAY EXIT is a space for the production and presentation of exhibitions and projects by experimental and contemporary young artists. Every Friday, openings, lectures, artist talks, and other formats that stand in relation to an artistic practice will take place. The program is put together by an open collective of students at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, selected from the proposed exhibition and performance concepts.
FRIDAY EXIT desires to establish a platform for dialogue, discourse, and interaction, to act as an interface between the interior and exterior of an arts university. Together with young artistic, curatorial, and scientific positions, FRIDAY EXIT is interested in examining forms of production and working. We understand this cooperation as a heterogeneous and lively process of exchange.
