Architectural education at the Institute for Art and Architecture is based on five research platforms. They provide the foundation for a new type of architectural education, in which students and teachers alike can focus on a particular interest and yet connect to all of the other topics that are essential to understand the complexity of the discipline of architecture. Each platform constitutes a research and design laboratory exploring relevant contemporary issues within its respective field.
The platforms are:
- GLC Geography Landscapes Cities
- HTC History Theory Criticism
- ESC Ecology Sustainability Conservation
- CMT Construction Material Technology
- ADP Analogue Digital Production
Design projects are at the center of the education and are taught by a versatile faculty of practicing architects, historians, engineers on a one-on-one basis and through team-teaching. The Academy of Fine Arts as a whole, with its Institutes for Fine Arts, Education in the Arts and Cultural Studies, provides an exciting interdisciplinary environment full of synergies.
The Institute for Art and Architecture offers a three year Bachelor Programme in Architecture (BArch) and a two year Master Programme in Architecture (MArch).
The first semester of the Bachelor Programme is an introductory phase familiarizing students with all five platforms. In the following five semesters, the fields of knowledge and potentials pertaining to the five platforms are developed and discussed in detail. Each of the five platforms is emphasized for one semester, thus defining the subject matter of that semester's explorations. The sequence of foci and platforms is one of increasing project complexity and skills.
The Master's Program in Architecture fosters open, research-based teaching. After an advanced introductory phase, students are largely free to select the focus of their curriculum. They are offered a choice between project and research focuses within the five platforms. They may concentrate on the topics of one platform or focus on a different platform each semester. In the course of the program, the focus will gradually shift from learning the tools of the profession to actively using them in research.
An entrance examination serves to select students with outstanding abilities and knowledge and therefore creates an a highly qualified and motivated surrounding for the students.
