Entrance Requirements
Admission as a regular student
The following requirements must be met for admission as a regular student:
A. Entrance examination
The examination dates for the next academic year are announced as of January of the current year at: http://www.akbild.ac.at/Portal/studium/studieninfos/zulassung-1.
Please note that there is no advanced registration for individual study programs.
B. Proof of eligibility to study at a university in the form of the following documents:
- school-leaving certificate (Matura) from an Austrian secondary school
- any other Austrian certificate entitling the holder to study a particular subject at university level
- an educational qualification from a foreign school which, by virtue of international treaties, nostrification, or a ruling by the rector of the Austrian university, can be deemed equivalent to an Austrian school-leaving certificate
- a certificate proving the holder's completion of a study program of at least three years' duration at a recognized Austrian or foreign post-secondary institution
Students of Fine Arts, Stage Design, and Conservation and Restoration are not required to provide proof of eligibility as specified above [B 1 - 4].
C. Proof that the applicant has met the requirements specific to the chosen study program
Applicants for the bachelor's program in Architecture and for Education in the Arts programs from outside the EU or EEA are admitted as regular students upon presentation of a certificate which would entitle them to study the same subject at a university in their own country, and which can be deemed equivalent to an Austrian school-leaving certificate (Matura) (proof of eligibility for direct admission to the chosen study program, though not at universities of applied science). Applicants for the master's program in Architecture from outside the EU or EEA also have to furnish proof of eligibility to continue the chosen study program.
Proof of examinations taken in addition to the school-leaving examination (Matura) in compliance with the regulations governing university admissions (e.g. Geometric Drawing for Architecture).
D. Proof of German language proficiency:
Applicants for study programs in Architecture (bachelor's and master's), Stage Design, Conservation and Restoration, Education in the Arts, and for doctoral programs must submit proof of proficiency in German prior to admission.
Non-German-speaking regular students of the Fine Arts must prove that they have a sufficient command of German to be able to follow their courses. If such proof is not provided by the end of the second consecutive semester of study, the student will be barred from registering until the said proof has been furnished.
Admission as a doctoral candidate:
The admission requirements for doctoral programs at the Institute for Natural Sciences and Technology in the Arts are as follows:
The candidate must be in possession of a science diploma, master's degree or teacher's degree in a relevant subject as well as an arts diploma or master's degree in a relevant subject.
Admission requirements for PhD programs:
The candidate must be in possession of a diploma or master's degree in the arts or the humanities or a teacher's degree in a relevant subject.
Applicants from outside the EU or EEA must furnish proof of eligibility for an equivalent doctoral program in their country of origin.
Admission as a non-degree student:
Non-degree students are those who are admitted to specific academic courses for a limited time only.
Recognition of examinations:
Regular students can apply to the Vice-rector for Teaching and Research for recognition of any examinations passed at a fully accredited post-secondary institution, college of higher education, higher training college or other university-level institution in Austria or abroad as long as the said examinations can be deemed equivalent to those required for the chosen study program.
Regular students can apply for recognition of examinations passed as non-degree students only if the said examinations were required for university courses, for the completion of a school-leaving examination (Matura), for a university entrance examination, or to prove physical-motor aptitude or artistic aptitude for that study program for which recognition is sought.
Applications for recognition must be submitted using the Akademie-Online-System and must be seconded by the Chair of the Curriculum Committee of the chosen study program. This duly seconded application must be submitted to the Programs and Examinations Department together with the relevant documents, duly notarized in compliance with the notarization rules.
