Virtues and paradoxes of sustainable living : the architecture of Glenn Murcutt

Australia has been, since over three decades, a new eldorado for domestic architecture. In particular, Glenn Murcutt's houses have been celebrated as exemplars of sustainable living. His small "machines for inhabiting the landscape" have indeed managed to reconcile what is often considered as contradictory: the activity of man and the preservation of nature; international modernism and local identity; technology and ecology. He has designed hundreds of these dwellings for his native country, consistently refusing to build anywhere else or to deal with other programmes, and even to run a conventional office. How does Murcutt's singular practice work, and what is the significance of his radical position? What are his formal influences, and the ideological underpinnings of his ideas ? To which extent does his extraordinarily seductive architecture respond to the challenges of our contemporary condition ? These are some of the questions that the lecture will put forward for debate.
