DESCRIPTION:Material imaginary worlds –imaginarios materiales– are eff
 ects of „collective aesthetics“. The influential Peruvian theorist Jua
 n Acha (1916-1995) advocated placing them at the centre of all art and cul
 tural studies. The symposium presents theses and research work that can be
  read in the context of this dictum. Various approaches to art and cultura
 l theory from Latin America will be taken up and applied to different subj
 ect areas. All contributions are located in the context of dissertation pr
 ojects at the IKW. In each case\, the analytical perspective is also suppo
 rted by a normative turn towards what Acha called an „independent visual
  culture“.
