In the course of the Hochschulraumstrukturmittel-project (project for the structural funding of the Higher Education Area) "Center for Doctoral Studies", two new grants for doctoral candidates enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna or the University of Art and Design Linz could be established: the Dissertation Completion Fellowship and the Travel Allowances for doctoral candidates. Both grants were advertised for the first time in the academic year 2014/15.

Beside the scholarships of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna there are also a variety of external grants and fellowships for doctoral students. We collected them for you and hope that this overview provides you with useful information.

Dissertation Completion Fellowship 2015/16


The Dissertation Completion Fellowship aims to support doctoral candidates in the finalization process of their doctoral theses or their PhD-projects, respectively. Overall, eleven fellowships for six months each can be awarded. The amount of the fellowship is EUR 1.000,-- per month.

Regular students of all doctoral studies and the PhD in Practice-Program of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna or of the University of Art and Design Linz can apply for the fellowship.

The Deadline for the Dissertation Completion Fellowships 2015|16 was on November 3rd 2015.

Travel Allowances for PhD-Candidates

Funding Criteria

  • Travel allowances can subsidize travel costs for participations in international conferences, congresses or symposia, if the submitted and accepted presentation is linked to the dissertation or the PhD-project.
  • Travel allowances can subsidize travel costs for realizations of art projects (in situ, art in architecture, etc.), which are directly linked to the dissertation or the PhD-project or presentations in the context of exhibitions, which are directly linked to the dissertation or the PhD-project.

Regular students of all doctoral studies and the PhD in Practice-Program of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna can apply for the allowances.

Deadline: Applications are possible throughout the year, but have to be submitted at least three weeks before (!!!) the start of the journey.

The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna offers a variety of grants to students - such as Mobility Scholarships for stays abroad, a Student Assistance Fund for students from so-called third countries (non-EU members), but also research grants for doctoral or PhD candidates, which are advertised every other year.
