We are happy to present Newsletter Art | Research No. 5.
In addition to information on current prizes, calls and related events, we are glad to introduce our new team member Michaela Glanz, who is responsible for the Art | Research | Service at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. She has an academic background in the field of Social Studies of Sciences and worked as a programme manager for the Vienna Science and Technolgoy Fund (WWTF), where she was e.g. responsible for the Art(s)&Sciences focus.

Please do not hesitate to contact Michaela if you do have a project idea, she will provide assistance at any stage of your funding application and any project related issues. You may contact her directly via email, m.glanz@akbild.ac.at, or during the weekly consultation jour fixe, every Tuesday 1 - 3 p.m (room M21).

congratulation: Sunny Afternoon

The film SUNNY AFERNOON by Thomas Renolder has been invited to participate in the international competition at ANNECY 2012, the renowned festival and world's top reference for animation films.
According to the website 49 out of 2,274 films have been selected for the international competition. Our congratulations and good luck for the final competition!

congratulation: SCHREIBMASCHINERIE

"Schreibmaschinerie" a film by Caro Estrada has been awarded the 3rd prize at the international competition at the Tricky Women 2012. Altogether more than 150 films by female artists all over the world were presented in Vienna. The winners were chosen by a Jury.
"Schreibmaschinerie" is the first animated film by Caro Estrada and was developed in the context of the university lectures by Veronika Schubert/Pascale Osterwalder and Christoph Urwalek/Willy Schmid at the IKL.

project news: atlas of arcadia

The project "Atlas of Arcadia" (funded by PEEK 2011) has been started on 1 April 2012. The project is lead by Anna Artaker und Meike Schmidt-Gleim and aims at creating a new social history of the world after the Cold War based on images instead of text The project team is affiliated to the Institute of Art Theory and Cultural Studies and is doing its research in the project room of the Academy (Turm 4, top floor).

CALL: peek

The goal of the Funding Program for Development and Appreciation of the Arts (PEEK) is to support high quality and innovative arts-based research in which artistic practice is of key importance to the inquiry. The program's goal is to increase research capacity, quality and international standing of arts-based research and researcher in Austria.

Projects have to be affiliated with an adequate Austrian research institution (like the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna). Project proposals have to be written in English, and must be submitted to FWF until 24 May 2012.

CALL: interspace

The Web-Initiative "interspace" invites you to take part in an international photographic correspondence marathon through facebook. The marathon will be open 30 April - 3 May 2012, participants will be able to respond to what they see with images, texts or other content of their own. During the marathon a 'situation room' will be established in the gallery of Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem, which will display the live developments of the correspondence.

CALL: drawings on utopia: youth

The Albertina, the European Forum Alpbach und The Gap present a call for drawings addressing the topic "Utopia: Youth" in a broad manner. The call invites young and creative people between 18 and 27 years. To participate in the competition you have to submit your drawing online at the website.

CALL: images of the poor conference

The conference "IMAGES (2) - Images of the Poor" is planned as an interdisciplinary and international conference bringingtogether senior scholars with PhD students, postdoctoral academics, and members of the artistic community. The conference is part of the IMAGES project by Veronika Bernard (University of Innsbruck) and Serhan Oksay (Kadir Has University) and is scheduled for 5-8 September 2012 (Austrian Culture Forum, Istanbul/ Turkey). During the time of the conference the two IMAGES project exhibitions will be shown. Participation in the conference is free of charge.

CALL: ONE MINUTES VIDEOS

The One Minutes Videos is an initiative of an art school in the Netherlands, the Sandberg Institute, master of the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Together with the Slade School of Fine Arts in London they are currently working on the video exhibition "SPORT [] like [] dislike" alongside the Olympic Games. Therefore they are looking for films around following themes: The loser / Speed / Feet / Anthem / The ideal body / Slow / Sport and TV / Athlete and landscape / Spectators / Trophies/ Sports of the past / Empty stadium.

CALL: lecture series "art - research -gender" (2012/13)

The "Art - Research - Gender" lecture series will be held at the University of Applied Arts Vienna over theacademic year 2012/13and can be taken as a course as well. It is organized by the Office of Gender Issues and is conceived as a continuation and reorientation of the gender studies@project space lecture series.
The Call for Papers "Gender Politics and the Art World" for the academic year 2012/13 invites scientists and artists of all disciplines to present their perspectives on the topic and to submit an abstract (in German or English). Submissions by young researchers and artists are particularly encouraged.

CALL: füger-priZE

The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna announces the so called "Füger-Prize" (awarded with 700 €), which invites to submit drawings with a max. size of 1m x 1m. If you want to participate in the competition, please contact the office at your institute for further instructions.

The jury meeting will take place on 19 June 2012, drawings have to be handed in at the Mehrzwecksaal/Atelierhaus at the same day between 9 and 11 a.m.

CALL: soqua-COURSE 2012-14

SOQUA is a two-year post-graduate training course aiming at fostering research competencies and project management expertise in the social sciences as well as inter- and transdisciplinary research contexts. CALL: Kasseler dokfest

The festival presents short and feature length international documentary films as well as experimental and artistic works. The exhibition Monitoring transfers the medium film from the cinema to the context of an exhibition in presenting contemporary media installations in addition to the film screenings. It is complemented with an audiovisual live program in the DokfestLounge as well as the interdisciplinary conference interfiction.

Call: MARIE CURIE FELLOWSHIPS

The different Marie Curie Actions aim at fostering the mobility of researchers and support the international dimension of research by means of three different instruments:
* Intra-European Fellowships (IEF) for researchers aiming at mobility within Europe.
* International Outgoing Fellowships (IOF) für researchers who want to work outside Europe
* International Incoming Fellowships (IIF) for researchers from outside Europe who want to establish themselves in Europe.

The program addresses researchers at all stages of their career, from early-stage to experienced researchers. Eligibility criteria include completion of PhD/doctorate respectively four years of research experience after graduation.

conference: Visual and performing arts

The 3rd "Annual International Conference on Visual and Performing Arts" organised by the Arts and Science Research Divison of the Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER) will take place on 4 - 7 June 2012. Selected papers from a broad range of areas of Visual Arts and Performing Arts will be presented. The concrete program is currently in the making.

INFO: FWF cooperation with developing countries

The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) now offers improved framework conditions for international research cooperations with partners in developing countries. These project partners may now get their direct project expenses (including personnel costs) also financed by FWF.
Note, the relevance of the envisaged cooperation as regards project aims and goal is part of the peer evaluation, further critera in terms of development policy are not applied.
