The Media Laboratory at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, closely linked to teaching, focuses on the artistic research of moving images media. On the basis of the analogous conception of the film in its relationship to the traditional electronic medium of television, new technologies have brought these two forms of media closer to each other. Such converging of practical artistic work with its reflection on a theoretical level works at a university in an exemplary way.
Lecturers' artistic projects - as there are Bettina Henkel and Friedemann Derschmidt as artists, filmmakers and researchers - increasingly focus on documentary work as an artistic strategy, oftentimes linked to historical research, theoretical reflection, and artistic research. This is our field of expertise. Through the support in external teaching, we have gained the expertise of cinematographer and filmmaker Ludwig Löckinger, who is famed for the high precision of his work.
