What is color, and how can materials influence the perception of artworks? These questions are at the center of academic teaching for the entire Academy and are dealt with in various research projects.
INTK is a national and international leader in the field of microbiological and molecular biological analyses of art and cultural property, in collections and archives, and for the preservation of historical monuments.
For the documentation of artworks electromagnetic radiation in the visible, infrared, ultraviolet and X-ray ranges are used for the visualization of the structure and present state of an object.
An essential field of research of the institute is the investigation of the long-term stability of materials in the Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage. Systematic studies on the influence of light, moisture and acidifying gases under natural and artificial conditions in weathering chambers are carried out.
Pigments, Dyes, Binders, Polymers, Additives, etc. – building a database of comprehensive materials information and reference spectra for the identification of unknown sample material from artworks
For the determination of the material composition of objects of art so-called non-destructive and non-invasive techniques are applied, which means that no original material has to be gained from the artwork. In the case of complex organic materials invasive analytical methods have to be used.
