This year's annual exhibition, ambiguously titled "Schmarotzer" and prepared by the director of the Moderna Galerija Ljubljana Zdenka Badovinac, presents the results of the "Parasite Class" initiated as a curatorial strategy at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. The leitmotif of the exhibition relates to this parasitic structure which, on the one hand, is docked with an existing institution, thwarting its objectives, and using it for its own purposes, while it alludes to the "parasite" character of all art practice within the social context on the other.
In several workshops, Zdenka Badovinac's "Parasite Class," which comprises students from various classes of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, has developed the exhibition's thematic focus and come to a decision concerning the selection of works to be shown and the form of presenting them: "Schmarotzer" explores parasitism in terms of active interventions in relatively homogenous systems, of measures opening up spheres of freedom and escape routes inside these systems. The presentation of the show, worked out by students of the Institute of Art and Architecture, is based on some sort of rhizomatic structure of plateaus on different levels, arranged like fields inside a grid with no beginning and no end.
The works shown in the "Schmarotzer" exhibition do not offer new, Utopian spaces of freedom, but rather seek freedom in reorganizing in their own way what already exists, thus testing different artistic parasitic strategies: they focus on new relations between pictures from the media (Manuel Gorkiewicz, Sebastijan Grizun, Peter Nachtigall), play with the usual modes of conveying information, explore how different contexts affect typical art contents and forms, analyze the connections between representative structures and reality (Claudia Mongini) and the relations between identities and cartoon characters (Peter Hochpöchler), add "subjective layers" (Nora Stalzer) or further parasitic cells (Bad Beuys) to the layers of the encountered exhibition installation, put art to the test "live" in various social situations (Eva Egerman/Nikola Winkler, project team "Culturareisen/V12"), investigate all individuality as determined by outside systems (Metka Golec, Gunda Gruber), use existing real situations or concrete actions as the "formal" elements of their works (Udo Bohnenberger, Alexander Wolff), dedicate themselves to the possibilities of relative freedom linked with different forms of organization within existing urban structures (Reval), within the sphere of socially organized time (Matej Modrinjak), of computer technology (Apo.K.), of accepted forms of social interaction (Laura Samaraweerova, Titanilla Eisenhart), of social rituals of exhibition openings (Astrid Steinbrecher), and - last, not least - the context of the architecture (Julia Wieger, Sonia Leimer, Matthias Brandstetter) and the furniture (Lone Haugaard Madsen) of the exhibition "Schmarotzer" itself.
