Since the Renaissance, artists from northern Europe had cast their eyes longingly towards Italy, the land of Antiquity, warmth and golden light. Many Dutch and Flemish painters who made their way southwards in the 17th century returned home again with sun-drenched landscapes and picturesque views of the Eternal City which proved immensely popular.
This exhibition showcases around a hundred superb works deriving from the Picture Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, from the holdings of its cooperation partner, the Liechtenstein Museum, as well as from other major European collections – a feast for the eyes in wintry Vienna!
