"The studio will intervene in contemporary spatial practices as they are set up by different art-institutions. By exploring the relationship between the role of architects, artists, curators, and their respective productions the studio reflects on imaginative alternatives in today's curatorial practices. Hereby we follow the assumption that "buildings in fact curate by themselves": how these institutions are organized, how they present themselves to the public, how they select art, how they emphasize, and represent "cultural matter", how they claim and occupy certain topics and content - all these techniques can be seen as a comprehensive political agenda which unfolds itself into the spatial organization of the physical built structure.
The biennales of Venice and Istanbul, a competition about a memorial on forced labour in Nuernberg, and the Kunstplatz-Karlsplatz in Vienna serve as concrete starting points of our interventions. As a common denominator, all three formats are driven by specific regimes of city-marketing. Our projects will address these regimes, offering strategies and tactics which undermine the instrumentalization of art and architecture.
