Language Competency

1. If you wish to come to Austria as an exchange student for a semester or for a year of study at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, or work on project-related artwork or research, you need not necessarily be able to speak German. It is entirely possible to live in Vienna for a limited period and to study without being able to speak German.

We offer a range of English-language courses; moreover, many of our teachers are prepared to assist students in English. Yet, please be make sure that you determine in advance whether your study program offers a sufficient number of courses in English. We also recommend taking advantage of our offer of German-language courses.

2. If you wish to complete a study program at the Academy, please be aware of the following:

For the following study programs, you must show proof of German language competency before admission: Architecture (BA and MA), Set Design, Conservation and Restoration, and all three respective Education in the Arts degrees. For these study programs you must show, before beginning the study program, language competency in German at the level of the school-leaving exam (at least B2 of the Common European Reference Scale for Languages).

German language proficiency may be demonstrated by the following certificates:

For the study of Fine Art you must show competency in German before registering for the third semester.

For the PhD in Practice, the language of instruction is English. Knowledge of English is to be shown during the process of admission, at the level of the school-leaving exam (B2 of the Common European Reference Scale for Languages).
