***This workshop has started on 5th November 2020. Registration to this workshop has already closed.***

This series includes three (half)-days of workshop-sessions on the following dates:
5th November 2020, 3rd December 2020, 14th January 2021

This series of workshops provides PhD students with the opportunity to develop their academic writing in English in three steps: Workshops 1 and 2 introduce key concepts and criteria regarding academic genres such as abstract, literature review, research paper, proposal and longer theses and provides a common ground for advanced academic English. The workshops take a functional and evidence-based, practical approach rooted in Applied Linguistics, covering academic style (vocabulary, phrases and grammar), text structure (chapters, sections and paragraphs) and genre-specific moves, perspective (authorial voice and positioning in the field) and argumentation (planning structure, rhetorical effectiveness, presenting conclusions). In addition, participants are introduced to tools and techniques that will support their writing projects. Workshop 3 offers the opportunity for all participants to present their own writing (in excerpts), discuss them in the group, and receive feedback for revision. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring examples of the writing to the first two workshops as well and use the time interval between workshops to revise and reflect their ongoing writing in English.
