Which Life? Between Calling and Career | Didactic Program

In the context of the Curator's Project of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna 2009
Curator: Sabine Breitwieser

What does the reality of artistic practice look like today? What about the social conditions under which it unfolds? And what is to be expected from receiving an artist’s education, for example, at the Academy?

Since 1998, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna has periodically invited an internationally renowned curator to have a look at its study courses for artists and present a selection of the students’ recent production. In this year’s exhibition, Sabine Breitwieser will directly thematize the image of the artist and his/her education.

A didactic program has been developed to accompany the exhibition. Interventions and events will offer insights into the exhibition process, explore artistic practices situated at the interface of art, didactic practice, curatorial approach, and knowledge production, and deal with the question of art’s freedom between self-determination and self- disciplining. The discussion will center on the artists’ social position and the structures of the precarious working conditions connected with it.

The subject of the exhibition will be explored from various view-points: artists, experts, people concerned with the presentation of art, and students will outline their positions in thematic tours and discussions. Literature as well as audio and video materials will provide a basis for further information.
