Caroline Edwards (University of London) will consider the rapidly changing open access (OA) landscape and its impact on academic research, with a lecture titled “How the Humanities are Changing Academic Publishing”.

One of the greatest challenges of academic publishing in the next several years will be the maintenance and establishment of alternative, non-commercial publication models to go along with a few and decreasing number of big traditional publishers.

One of the most promising models for the field of humanities is the Open Library of Humanities (OLH) . The OLH is an Open Access Journal that publishes Open Access articles from all areas of the humanities and that neither charges fees from authors nor from readers. At the same time the OLH is also a service platform for established or new journals which want to flip from subscription to Open Access or want to start as Open Access journals.

The OLH is financed via crowdfunding and includes already more than 100 institutions. Since 2016, the Academy of Fine Arts and the FWF are supporters of the OLH.

At the invitation of the Academy of Fine Arts and the FWF, Dr. Caroline Edwards , Founder of the OLH, will give a talk at the Aula der Akademie der bildenden Künst on July 5th, 2016 . In her talk titled “How the Humanities are Changing Academic Publishing” , Edwards, who is currently Lecturer at the University of London, will consider the rapidly changing open access (OA) landscape and its impact on academic research, with a particular focus on humanities scholarship. Dr Edwards will outline how the OLH has grown and what it can offer scholars in terms of bring together the best of traditional publishing and editorial practices with cutting-edge technological innovations in digital publishing and infrastructure.

The event will be held in English.
