With the end of summer we would like to inform you about numerous submission opportunities and events.

We want to point to the Academy's grants and prizes: Prize for Best Research Catalogue Exposition (deadline: 6.10.2026, 11 h), Going Book: Grant for Publication Costs (ongoing), Academy Open Access Publishing Fund (ongoing).

We take this chance to draw special attention to the 7th Africa-UniNet Call. The objective of this call is transdisciplinary knowledge exchange between Austrian and African universities through project work (deadline: 30.11.2026, 13 h).

In the context of the Postdoc Appreciation Week Austria, we will host a Postdoc Get-together on 24 September 2026, 16–18 h at the Academy. All postdocs or colleagues interested in a postdoc career are invited.

This year's Research Day will take place on 11 November 2026, 10–15 h, at the Academy. We cordially invite you to participate in the event and to get to know and discuss current research projects along with their results!

Our congratulations to Jelena Micić for receiving a Marietta Blau Grant from the OeAD and BMFWF. The grant funds a 6-month research stay in Serbia in the context of her dissertation project "Laboring Non-Alignment: Material Gaze, and Synthetic Solidarities in Leda Footwear and Plastics Industry".

Natural Sciences and Technology in Art

ABC – Ancient Book Crafts | Publication

In June, the open-access publication The dating of leather bindings using ER-FTIR spectroscopy and machine learning authored by Patrick Layton, Katja Sterflinger, Johannes Tintner-Olifiers and colleagues appeared. The publication was funded by the FWF Open Access Block Grant and is based on the ABC – Ancient Book Crafts project, led by Johannes Tintner-Olifiers (1.7.2022 – 31.10.2025).

The Federal Ministry for Housing, Art, Culture, Media and Sport is inviting applications for 2028 international studio grants for artists in Accra, Helsinki, London, New York, Paris, Seoul, Tokyo and Vilnius. The aim of the funding is to enable artists to spend a period of time in a studio abroad in order to realize artistic projects within an international context and to advance their careers outside Austria by building networks.

The competition is aimed at graduates from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. The workshop for doctoral candidates "Narrative Techniques for Clear, Memorable Research Presentations. From Planning and Messaging to Structure and Slides" will take place on 19  October 2026. Registration is open until 6 October.

Doctoral candidates of the Academy whose dissertation or PhD project is at an advanced stage can apply for our Dissertation Completion Fellowship until 20 October 2026. On 5 October, there will be an Online Info Session on the submission process.

Since 2005, the publishing house Barbara Budrich awards its dissertation award called promotion. One doctoral thesis will be selected by an expert jury for the free-of-charge publication in Verlag Barbara Budrich.
