After a successful start into the new semester, we are pleased to inform you about current calls for applications and grants.

First, we would like to cordially invite you all to the Research Day at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna on 12 November, 2025. You can register for the free event via kfs@akbild.ac.at. We look forward to welcoming many of you to this day of research! 

In addition, we would like to draw your attention to the Dissertation Completion Fellowship 2025/26 (deadline: 28.10.2025, 11h) and the Emanuel and Sophie Fohn Scholarship 2025 (deadline: 28.10.2025, 11h). The latter is awarded annually to the most talented students of fine arts and art history as well as students who are completing post-graduate studies, seminars or other further education programs. 

In November, there are several deadlines for international cooperation programs of the OeAD: Scientific & Technological Cooperation Albania (deadline: 6.11.2025, 12h), North Macedonia (deadline: 11.11.2025, 12h), and Montenegro (deadline: 28.11.2025, 12h), the 6th Call Cooperation Development Research (deadline: 30.11.2025, 13h) as well as the 6th Call Africa Uni-Net (deadline: 30.11.2025, 13h).

Second Elfriede Mejchar Award for Photography

  • Deadline: 25.10.2025

The Elfriede Mejchar Award for Photography has been awarded for the first time on the occasion of Elfriede Mejchar's 100th birthday in 2024 as part of the commemorative exhibition that the Province of Lower Austria holded at the State Gallery of Lower Austria in Krems. After that, the prize will be awarded biennially until further notice.

The Emanuel and Sofie Fohn Scholarship Foundation is once again offering up to 10 scholarships this year, totaling 20,000 Euro, for exceptionally talented students and graduates from Austria and South Tyrol, as well as for Italians with German as their first language.

The Dissertation Completion Fellowship aims to support doctoral students in the last phase of their dissertation until completion. Fellows will receive the stipend for a period of six months in the year 2026.

Established in 2005, the B&C Private Foundation’s Houska Prize was set up to promote business-related research and innovation. By awarding the prize, B&C’s goal is to help strengthen Austria as a business location while expressing its appreciation for the outstanding research work carried out in the country.

Upon decision of the board of the Association of Friends of Fine Arts (GFBK) on 27 November 1996, the Graphic Collection of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna was accorded an annual budget of for "continuous acquisitions of young Austrian art with special consideration given to graduates of the Academy, but also considering related international works of art".

Open Call of the Academy | Demokratie leben

  • Deadline: 25.11.2025, 17 h

In July, the initiative Demokratie leben was launched with an invited competition, which ran over the summer on various Gewista Citylights in public spaces in Vienna and on all of the institutions' digital channels. An open call for all students, alumni, and teachers of the academy has now been announced for the continuation of the series in January and February 2026.

Nordic Journal for Artistic Research | VIS Open Call #16

  • Call for Contributions: 27.11.2025

VIS has opened the call for exposition proposals with the topic "Beyond Compliance: Ethics in Artistic Research". In this issue, they are looking for contributions that interrogate the role of ethics in their historical, political, and material entanglements in direct relation to artistic research.

Interreg Central Europe | Strategic Call for Capitalisation

  • Deadline: 27.11.2025

This call is open 25 September to 27 November, 2025 and has a total budget of about 23 million Euro. Projects of all topics in the program can be submitted. The goal is to implement existing results of running Interreg Central Europe projects and to further develop transnational projects, shaping them towards current and future challenges.

The programme "Cooperation Development Research" (KoEF), financed by the BMFWF and implemented by OeAD, is a funding program to foster research on the two main principles of excellency and cooperation in development research.

OeAD | Africa-UniNet 6th Call

  • Deadline: 30.11.2025, 13 h

Africa-UniNet aims to facilitate and strengthen existing and new inter- and transdisciplinary research cooperation between Austria and African countries. Africa-UniNet promotes excellent research based on the mutual exchange of knowledge. This call is only open to internal academy researchers, as the cooperative research projects will run through the institution.

OeAD | Austrian Development Research Award 2025

  • Deadline: 30.11.2025

The Austrian Development Research Award is presented every two years to academically active institutions and individuals who have made a special achievement in the field of development research (publications, projects and initiatives). The prize consists of a main prize and a young researchers' prize and is awarded by the Agency for Education and Internationalisation (OeAD) with funds from the Federal Ministry of Women, Science and Research (BMFWF).

Schiele Award 2026

The Schiele Award of the Rotary Club Tulln & Rotary Club Wien Albertina is an art prize that has been awarded every two years since 2022. Young artists are warmly invited to participate in the Open Call 2026.

The international symposium "Duplicity/Duplicität: Betwixt intimates and strangers" will be held in Berlin from 29–31 January 2026 and marks the opening of a three-year research project titled "Studies in Remoteness".

Titled "Spreading Knowledge", the program invites researchers to host konwledge-transfer events in cooperation with FWF. The goal is to share research results and to intensify the knowledge transfer between science, economy and society.

Horizon Europe | ERC Consolidator Grant Call 2026

The ERC Consolidator Grants are designed to support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they may still be consolidating their own independent research team or program. Principal Investigators must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal.

Eberhard (Eb)-Dietzsch-Kunstfreunde | 9th Eb-Dietzsch Award for painting

The Eb-Dietzsch Award for painting is awarded to artists until the age of 35 years who are at the start of their careers. One work per person can be submitted, the topic is free of choice. All techniques of painting are accepted.

The call for the Dissertation Completion Fellowship is open until October 28 – the call addresses doctoral and PhD candidates of the Academy whose dissertation or PhD project is in an advanced stage.

This workshop deals with questions relating to copyright in dissertations and provides information, tips and background knowledge on how copyright must be taken into account when working on a dissertation or PhD project.

The scholarship for a short-term stay abroad for doctoral/PhD candidates supports stays abroad for e.g. research, field research, archival research, interviews, which are necessary for the dissertation or the PhD project. Stays abroad are funded for a minimum of two to a maximum of eight weeks.

In order to better meet their different learning and training needs EU ERASMUS+ offers doctoral students the opportunity to complete a short-term study visit abroad in Europe.

Doctoral and PhD candidates of the Academy of Fine Arts have the opportunity to spend a semester abroad at a partner university within the framework of Erasmus+.

ifk | Junior Fellowship

The ifk Junior Fellowships are intended for young Austrian academics doing their dissertations, as well as for non-Austrian doctoral students who are being supervised at an Austrian university.

OeAD | Marietta Blau-Grant

  • Deadline: 1.2.2026

The Marietta Blau Grant offers financial support for six- to twelve-month study periods abroad for doctoral or PhD students of Austrian universities. It serves to optimise their dissertations. Junior researchers are the main target group.
