Dear colleagues,
dear alumni, 

With the end of summer we would like to inform you about numerous submission opportunities and calls. 

We want to point to the Academy's grants and prizes: Prize for Best Research Catalogue Exposition (deadline: 7.10.2025, 11h), Going Book: Grant for Publication costs (ongoing), Grant for Open Access Publication Costs (ongoing). 

We take this chance to draw special attention to the 6th Africa-UniNet Call. The objective of this call is transdisciplinary knowledge exchange between Austrian and African universities through project work (deadline: 30.11.2025).

This year's Research Day will take place on November 12, 2025 at the Academy, 9:30–17h in the Sitzungssaal at Schillerplatz 3. We cordially invite you to participate in the event and to get to know and discuss current research projects along with their results!

Within the FWF Esprit Project "The Performance of Critique: AI, Bodily Intelligence, and Posthumanist Aesthetics" Lisa Moravec delves into recent artistic practices that stage AI systems and bodily performances. Her critical review of Philippe Parreno's exhibition "Voices" at Haus der Kunst appeared in the summer issue (84) of Spike Art Magazine

The Federal Ministry is offering international studio grants for artists in ACCRA, HELSINKI, LONDON, NEW YORK, PARIS, SEOUL, TOKYO, and VILNIUS for the year 2027, as well as 5 open Artist-in-Residence scholarships “FREE AWAY” for artists and curators.

The "Staatsstipendien" (State grants) represent recognition of outstanding artistic achievements to date and serve to promote further artistic creation. The scholarships are awarded to artists working on an extensive artistic project in the specified fields (visual arts, photography, and media art) whose work is distinguished by a particular degree of originality and an exceptional innovative component.

The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures of the University of Bucharest is hosting an interdisciplinary workshop 20–22 November, 2025. This event, held both on-site and online, seeks to bring together scholars to explore how creative and critical forms of representation have shaped, challenged, and reimagined the medicalized body from the 19th century to the present.

This prize rewards outstanding contributions to the Research Catalogue (i.e. RC Expositions) by staff and students of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. We are looking for published RC contributions from the years 2024 and 2025.

The ERC Starting Grants are designed to support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they are starting their own independent research team or programme. Principal Investigators must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature, ambition, and feasibility of their research proposal.

Open Call of the Academy | Publication Series 2025 for text-based publications

  • Call for Contributions: 15.10.2025, 11 h

The current call is aimed at the production of publications for which the manuscript has been completed as far as possible and at least a comprehensive text sample is available, e.g. an entire chapter, for a timely start of production. Thematically, the call is open.

Otto Mauer Fonds | Msgr. Otto Mauer Prize 2025

  • Deadline: 15.10.2025

In continuation of the mission of Msgr. Otto Mauer (1907–1973), who gained international recognition for his commitment to contemporary art and young artists, the Otto Mauer Fonds will award the 45th Msgr. Otto Mauer Prize for Visual Arts (painting, graphic arts, sculpture, objects, installations, new media) at the end of the year.

Second Elfriede Mejchar Award for Photography

  • Deadline: 25.10.2025

The Elfriede Mejchar Award for Photography has been awarded for the first time on the occasion of Elfriede Mejchar's 100th birthday in 2024 as part of the commemorative exhibition that the Province of Lower Austria holded at the State Gallery of Lower Austria in Krems. After that, the prize will be awarded biennially until further notice.

The Dissertation Completion Fellowship aims to support doctoral students in the last phase of their dissertation until completion. Fellows will receive the stipend for a period of six months in the year 2026.

Every year, the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor (AK OÖ) awards a science prize for scientific work that serves to improve the working and living conditions of employees.

Dear doctoral candidates,

a new semester is just around the corner, and we’d like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to upcoming events, as well as ongoing calls and funding opportunities.

On November 19, 2025, we invite you to an informal Open Door Event at the Center for Doctoral Studies. We will be happy to answer all your questions concerning doctoral studies, and it will also be a great opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues.

On November 26, 2025, we are offering a workshop on Copyright, and on January 15, 2026, a workshop on Exposé Writing in English for doctoral candidates.

Doctoral and PhD candidates of the Academy whose dissertation or PhD project is at an advanced stage can apply for our Dissertation Completion Fellowship until October 28, 2025. An online info session on October 6 will provide details on the application process and the scholarship timeline.

There is also an opportunity to apply for an OeAW Mannagetta-Fellowship to support the completion of the doctoral thesis (application deadline: October 6, 2025).

The exposé represents the foundation and starting point for the doctoral thesis and is a crucial first step in the overall writing process. This one-day workshop is designed for doctoral candidates across all disciplines (Dr.phil., PhD in Practice, Dr.techn., Dr.rer.nat.) and offers hands-on guidance for writing exposés in English.

The scholarship for a short-term stay abroad for doctoral/Ph.D. candidates supports stays abroad for e.g. research, field research, archival research, interviews, which are necessary for the dissertation or the Ph.D. project. Stays abroad are funded for a minimum of two to a maximum of eight weeks.

We would like to give doctoral and PhD candidates and their dissertation projects space on the Academy website and present information about them in a separate section of the Center for Doctoral Studies. We, therefore, ask all doctoral and PhD candidates with an approved dissertation agreement who would like to be visible as doctoral or PhD candidates on the Academy website to fill out the  application form and upload the required documents.

Mannagetta-Fellowships are financed from the funds of the Johann Wilhelm Ritter von Manngetta Foundation at the OeAW.
