Please find below the current newsletter Art | Research, in which we inform you about a variety of calls and events.

On 15.11.2023, we would like to cordially invite everyone to the Research Day at the Academy. Registration for the free event is now open via kfs@akbild.ac.at. We are very much looking forward to this Research Day!

In addition, we would very much like to draw your attention to the Call for the Scholarship for Early Post Doc Applications 2024 at the Academy (deadline for submission: 25.1.2024). The fellowship enables the intensive preparation of a project proposal, which will finally be submitted together with the Academy as the home institution to funding institutions such as the FWF (funding program Esprit) or the ÖAW (funding program Apart GSK). The call is open to all post-docs.

There are also numerous workshops and calls at the Center for Doctoral Studies that guarantee an exciting fall program.

Art Theory and Cultural Studies

Anette Baldauf | Extractivism and the Arts

Congratulations to Anette Baldauf, Berhanu Ashagrie, Anca Benera, and Rehema Chachage who have successfully submitted a cooperation project with partners in Ethiopia and Tanzania to OeAD’s call for development research. The project "Extractivism and the Arts" has been started on 1 October 2023 at IKW and will run for three years. All the best for a successful implementation!

Ruby Sircar | Interdisciplinary Puppetry Modules for Art Universities

Congratulations and best wishes also go to Ruby Sircar (IBK) and the ERASMUS+ cooperation project "Interdisciplinary Puppetry Modules for Art Universities". The project will be coordinated by Theater Lilarum and implemented in cooperation with partners from Hungary and Croatia. Looking forward to the results!

Henrie Dennis | Würdigungspreis 2023 by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research

Congratulations to Henrie Dennis on receiving the Würdigungspreis 2023 by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research. Dennis graduated with honors in June 2023, studying in the Studio for Post-conceptual Art (IBK) under Marina Grzinic. The diploma work "Will You Marry Me?" explores the complex of passport politics, marriage, and migration.

Carola Dertnig | VCT Sculpture Project

We congratulate Carola Dertnig (IBK) very warmly on the "VCT Sculpture Project" prize, which was awarded for the first time. The sculpture "Feldenkreis_FI_001_Lucia Westerguard" was unveiled in Vienna's Stadtpark as part of viennacontemporary in September.

The best presentation and best poster awards at the 6th International Mass Spectrometry School went to Teodora Raicu, doctoral candidate at the INTK. Congratulations!

Not only at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, but at numerous other Austrian universities, students, teachers and scholars are engaged in critical reflection and reappraisal of the historical responsibility of educational institutions. During the conference, selected projects of the University of Innsbruck, the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna will be presented and discussed.

Pathways to an Early Postdoc Career

The Research Service and the Center for Doctoral Studies kindly invite all interested doctoral candidates and (early) postdocs to participate in an informal meeting to exchange experiences and ideas on how to start an early postdoc career. Which possibilities are offered? Which funding programs match my very own perspective/approach? What requirements do I have to keep in mind?

Input comes from Anna Leon and Judith-Frederike Popp, two early postdocs leading their research projects in different funding programs and who will share their experiences.

ÖAW and FWF | Early Career Seed Money

  • Deadline: 31.10.2023

The Early Career Seed Money funding program, endowed with two million euros, supports young scientists in developing and researching completely new ideas. This is intended to enable the implementation of projects that do not fit into the previous funding programs. Outstanding researchers up to a maximum of three years after their doctorate can apply with their idea.

The Emanuel and Sofie-Fohn Scholarship Foundation is once again offering scholarships totaling 20.000 Euro for highly talented students and graduates from Austria and South Tyrol and for Italians whose native language is German.

The aim is to provide support for a small group of two to four Principal Investigators to jointly address ambitious research problems that could not be addressed by the individual Principal Investigators and their teams working alone.

The OeAW awards up to eight fellowships per year to holders of a doctorate or PhD in the humanities and social and cultural sciences in order to assist in the transition to the post-doc phase.

With Africa-UniNet an instrument has been created to enable and strengthen existing and new interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research cooperation between Austria and African countries. Africa-UniNet promotes excellent research based on mutual knowledge exchange. This call is only open to in-house researchers, as the joint research projects will run through the institution.

The Scholarship for Early Postdoc Applications aims to support early postdocs in the application for their initial postdoctoral research project. This scholarship enables the intensive preparation of a project proposal, which will be submitted with the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna as the home institution to funding agencies like FWF (ESPRIT funding program) or OeAW (APART GSK funding program) in the end. Dear doctoral candidates,

we hope you had a good start into the semester and are having an inspiring and productive time.

In the following we would like to inform you about the upcoming activities, events and calls of the Center for Doctoral Studies. You can find further funding opportunities for doctoral candidates below.

In November, we will have an Open Door of the Center for Doctoral Studies. All of you who would like to exchange ideas with other doctoral students and colleagues and find out about the offers of the Center for Doctoral Studies are invited to visit us on November 21, 2023, from 3:00 to 4:30 pm (room 201, Schillerplatz 3). The Registrar’s Office will also be represented and be happy to answer all your questions. You can find more information about the event here. Registration is not required.

On November 22, 2023, all interested doctoral candidates and (early) postdocs are cordially invited to a Coffee Table Talk on the topic "Pathways to an Early Postdoc Career". More information can be found here.

Save the date for everyone who wants to prepare for the last steps in their doctoral studies: On January 18, 2024, we will have a Coffee Table Talk online event discussing the "Final Steps: Dissertation Submission and Defensio". More about the event can be found here.

We have also put together a handout with step-by-step instructions from submitting your dissertation to the defense, which you can find here.

If you are interested in submitting for the "Dissertation Completion Fellowship 2023/24", you can do so until November 7, 2023. You can find the call here.

The scholarship for a short-term stay abroad for doctoral/Ph.D. candidates supports stays abroad for e.g. research, field research, archival research, interviews, which are necessary for the dissertation or the Ph.D. project. Stays abroad are funded for a minimum of two to a maximum of eight weeks.

We would like to give doctoral and Ph.D. candidates and their dissertation projects space on the Academy website as well and present information about them in a separate section of the Center for Doctoral Studies. We, therefore, ask all doctoral and Ph.D. candidates with an approved dissertation agreement who would like to be visible as doctoral or Ph.D. candidates on the academy website to fill out the application form and upload the required documents.

Regular students of all doctoral studies and the Ph.D.-in-Practice-Program of the Academy can apply for travel allowances for participations in international conferences as well as for the presentation of art projects.

Due to Covid-19 the Center for Doctoral Studies supports regular doctoral students of the Academy in presenting dissertation/Ph.D. project results at digital conferences and symposia or in the presentation of art projects with a refund of conference fees.

With the DOC-team funding programme, the Austrian Academy of Sciences puts together teams of 3 to 4 doctoral candidates from the humanities and the social and cultural sciences to develop interdisciplinary solutions to problems. Involvement of doctoral candidates from the fields of the natural sciences, medicine or technology is desirable.

Doctoral and Ph.D. candidates of the Academy of Fine Arts have the opportunity to spend a semester abroad at a partner university within the framework of Erasmus+.

EU ERASMUS+ | Short-term stay abroad

  • There is no submission deadline

In order to better meet the different learning and training needs of doctoral students and to ensure equal opportunities, doctoral students will also have the opportunity to complete a short-term study visit abroad in Europe from the summer semester of 2022.
