Elisabeth Bakambamba Tambwe asserts that the museum can no longer be seen as a place where the truth is presented according to a single field of knowledge. Rather, it must speak to different ways of seeing, and observing. In conversation with curator Marina Grzinić, Bakambamba discusses her artwork The Eye (2020), relating to one display case in the collection Sammlerwahn : A giant eye monitors this display case, scrutinizing both the severed heads, and also those viewing them.
Elisabeth Bakambamba Tambwe was born in Kinshasa, DR Congo, and raised in France. Bakambamba Tambwe studied visual art at the Tourcoing School of Fine Arts in France. She lives and works in Vienna as a performance artist, choreographer, and multimedia visual artist. elitambwe.com
Dr. Marina Gržinić is a philosopher, theoretician, and artist from Ljubljana, Slovenia. She serves as a professor and research adviser. Since 2003, she is a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, in Austria. She is the project leader of the Genealogy of Amnesia: Rethinking the Past for a New Future of Conviviality, an interdisciplinary, arts, and theory-based research project. It is funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) through its Programme for Arts-based Research (PEEK). The research is developed at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, from 2018 to 2020. The exhibition is part of this research project.
