The PhD in Practice welcome you to one of their Fantastic Weekdays events where one of the candidates presents part of their artistic research to an open audience. Join us for screenings, performances and discussions.

Aykan Safoğlu will present two artistic works that have resulted from the artistic research of his ongoing thesis project: the photographic sculpture Null-Defizit (in Ablehnung) [Zero Deficit (In Refusal)] and the essay film Hundsstern steigt ab [Dog Star Descending]. The two works were recently commissioned and co-produced by the 11th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, which was curated by María Berríos, Renata Cervetto, Lisette Lagnado, and Agustín Pérez Rubio. Safoğlu’s works were displayed at Gropius Bau as part of the epilogue of the Biennale titled The Crack Begins Within that ran from September 5 through November 1, 2020.

Aykan Safoğlu’s thesis project looks back on his teenage years at the German-Turkish public high school İstanbul Erkek Lisesi, popularly known as Istanbul Boys’ High School—one of the oldest and most renowned in Turkey. Critically reflecting on his personal educational trajectory and the school’s history, Safoğlu touches upon repressed family incidents and the German colonial interest in Asia Minor at the turn of the twentieth century, which somehow seem perfectly intertwined.

Aykan Safoğlu was born in Istanbul and graduated from the Art in Context MA program at Universität der Künste, Berlin. He received his MFA in Photography from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College, NY. His works cultivate relationships and even friendship among cultural, geographical, linguistic, and temporal boundaries. Through his work in multiple media including film, photography, and performance, Safoğlu conducts open-ended investigations into cultural identity, creativity, and kinship.
