Book presentation with Elana Shapira. Introduction notes by Gabriele Kohlbauer-Fritz. (in English)

A recent surge of interest in Jewish patronage during the golden years of Vienna has led to the question: Would modernism in Vienna have developed in the same fashion had Jewish patrons not been involved? Elana Sahpira’s book Style and Seduction uniquely treats Jewish identification within Viennese modernism as a matter of Jews active fashioning of a new language to convey their aims of emancipation along with their claims of cultural authority.

Style and Seduction. Jewish Patrons, Architecture, and Design in Fin de Siècle Vienna was published by Brandeis University Press in 2016.

Elana Shapira is an art and design historian, specializing in émigré history in Europe and America. She is senior lecturer at the Department of Design History and Theory at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.

Gabriele Kohlbauer-Fritz is curator and collection manager at the Jewish Museum Vienna.
