Workshop with Artist in Residence Metasebia Simatchew. She is currently the artist in residence of the Academy’s Residency-Program.

Welcome : Johan Hartle, Ingeborg Erhart

This workshop proposes to take a break from adulthood. Adulthood is understood as a time, within which we have to consume each and everything this world provides. Can we enjoy the material that we have at hands without associating it with something else? The workshop suggests to engage in simple interactions between human and non-human material without forming a specific narration. We are not expected to explain or to define, only to share the experiences and the challenges afterwards. This exercise is inspired by years of working with children and the longing to be able to enjoy the very moment as children do.
It is not childish but it is a child thing to do.
Can we restore that at all?

Metasebia Simatchew is a visual artist and an art educator in the city of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She studied at the Alle School of Fine Art and Design at the Addis Ababa University and has since been working as a sculpturer, jewelry maker and leather artist. Her work has been exhibited in Ethiopia and in Kenya, and she has been part of the collective Netsa Art Village. Since 2013 she has offered art workshops for children living with HIV at the orphan center in Addis Ababa.
