Molding and Casting Techniques
Various courses in moulding and casting techniques, ceramics, and digital form generation are offered in the workshop as part of the Academy’s study programme.
Molding and casting technique:
This area is taught in the foundation courses Moulding and Casting Techniques A + B. The courses cover the production of moulds made from plaster, silicone, and laminated composites using acrylic resin and jute. In addition, we introduce the basics of body moulding with alginate and teach multi-part plaster mould construction for ceramic slip casting.
Working with fungal mycelium as a material that grows inside moulds has also been taught in a special format; a basic set of equipment for this is now available in the workshop.
The foundation courses A + B form the basis for the project components of the courses as well as for independent project work in the workshop.
Ceramics:
Another focus of the workshop is ceramic work. Two kilns are available. Alongside slip casting, we teach various ceramic forming techniques such as hand-building and modelling.
We primarily work with high-firing clays such as stoneware and porcelain, and we regularly carry out bisque firings (950–980 °C) and glaze firings (1200–1230 °C).
The introductory course “Ceramics 1” serves as the foundation for independent project work.
Digital mold creation:
In the foundation course 3D Modelling and Object-Making, students learn the basics of digital object creation using 3D software. The project component of the course focuses on the material realisation of these digitally created models through 3D printing.
A 3D scanning system is also available in the workshop and is used as part of the project work.
Usage
After completing the required courses, the workshop can be used during opening hours without prior registration. Students who have relevant experience from other educational programmes may also work in the workshop without attending the courses; only a brief introduction to the workshop regulations is required.
