- Why is the statue in the auditorium on Schillerplatz covered?
Since 2021, Felix Kofler* has been covering the "Heroic Memorial for the Fallen Art Academics" by sculptor Josef Müllner, which was unveiled in the auditorium on June 17, 1925. Josef Müllner (1879–1968) was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1910 to 1948, serving as its vice-rector and rector for several terms. As a student and, as master school director, he was a busy artist for decades, receiving awards from every regime, from the Austro-Hungarian Empire through Austrofascism and the Nazi era to the postwar period. Müllner was an "honorary fellow" of the Athenaia Association of German Art Academics, a member of the Nazi Party (from 1940), the Nazi Lecturers' Association, and the Nazi Old Boys' Association. In 1940, he created a bust of Hitler for the Academy's auditorium (whereabouts unknown). In 1944, he was included in the list of "divinely gifted" by the Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. In 1948, Müllner received honorary membership of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, which was revoked in 2023 due to his role in National Socialism. (Further information about the monument is available from the University Archives of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.)
