On October 9, 2021, the grand opening exhibition Hungry for Time by internationally active curators Raqs Media Collective will launch in the space of the Paintings Gallery at the newly renovated Academy at Schillerplatz. Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula and Shuddhabrata Sengupta were invited to interrogate the Academy's historical art collections from an external perspective and to accompany their thematic realignments through a dialogue with contemporary art. Based on the expertise of the institution, the exhibition opens up the possibility of reconsideration, incorporating the current discourse on decolonialism in art and cultural studies. The participating international artists, curators, theorists, and authors work across media in the fields of installation, sculpture, video, performance, and text at the intersection of contemporary art, philosophical speculation, and historical engagement. In Hungry for Time, historical works from the holdings of the Paintings Gallery, Plaster Cast Collection and Graphic Collection, such as those by by Willem van Aelst, Johann "Hans" Bitterlich, Hieronymus Bosch, Daniel Chodowiecki, Albrecht Dürer, Thomas Ender, Maria Sybilla Merian, Egon Schiele or Michael Wutky, among others, meet the contemporary artists of the Discursive Justice Ensemble (Lantian Xie, (Dubai), Michelle Wong (Hong Kong), Kabelo Malatsie (Cape Town)), Zachary Formwalt (Amsterdam), Paul Pallavi and Devasher Rohini (New Delhi) and the Raqs Media Collective (New Delhi).

Zachary Formwalt. But where are the Hundred-Handed Ones?

On the occasion of the recent painting restoration in the Aula of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, the Academy invited artist Zachary Formwalt to create a site-specific artistic work. The video Aber wo sind die Hundertarmigen? is an exploration of Anselm Feuerbach's ceiling paintings depicting the fall of the Titans and the architecture surrounding them. Zachary's artistic-essayistic reflection makes the triumph of culture over nature (Feuerbach) or of thought over the laws of time (Schiller) seem less assured than the frescoes and surroundings might at first suggest.
