Lecture with Dr. Karin Hutflötz as part of the research project Daring Emotions, organized by the Department of Art and Cultural Education at the Institute for Education in the Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

Emotions are of great significance in education. They not only influence learning and memory, but also play a central role in self and social formation. At the same time, emotions—their perception and expression—are themselves shaped by social, political, and aesthetic processes of education. This lecture takes a transdisciplinary perspective, asking what emotions are when seen in relational terms, how they can impact education, and what this means for (art) pedagogy.

Focusing on the example of shame—an emotion that strongly inscribes itself into processes of self and social formation—the lecture will sketch structural interrelations and power dynamics, and ground these reflections in experiences from educational and counseling practice.

Dr. Karin Hutflötz is a philosopher and postdoctoral researcher at the Chair of Philosophy of Education and Systematic Pedagogy at KU Eichstätt. She also works independently in Munich, offering counseling and coaching.
