The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna invites properly enrolled students to submit concepts for the overall design of the new multipurpose space at Getreidemarkt 12. The call addresses primarily students of architecture and stage design; submissions from interdisciplinary teams are expressly welcome.

The multipurpose space measures 40 square meters; its renovation will be completed by April 2020. The artistic design proposed by the submitted concept should consider to aim at a powerful external effect of the space, which has three windows facing Getreidemarkt. The space should be conceived as a showcase of the Academy that clearly highlights the interface with public space.

The design concept should be suited to allow for different forms of use of the space so that it may serve as a venue for workshops, lectures, and screenings with a maximum occupancy rate of around forty people. Furnishing concepts should therefore offer a high degree of flexibility; they may be based on furniture available at the Academy, furniture to be purchased, or newly designed items.

The implementation of the design and furnishing concept is scheduled for September 2020; the solution will be installed for one year. Due to this limited period of time, the exhibition commission will prefer concepts that consider aspects of sustainability and the careful use of resources.

Submission details

Projects may be submitted by properly enrolled students of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna of all fields of study, both by individuals and by groups (in the form of a joint submission).

Submissions should be uploaded as a PDF file (max. 5 MB) and should contain the following elements:

  • the concept in writing (c. 1 A4 page),
  • sketches/visualizations of the design proposal,
  • a list of estimated material and implementation costs,
  • a short curriculum vitae (max. 1 A4 page per person).

The design concept should consider the usual safety conditions (accessibility, escape route widths of 150 cm, materials with B1/Q1 certification, etc.). These parameters must be clarified in detail before the implementation of the chosen project.

The PDF file must be uploaded to https://calls.akbild.ac.at by Friday, April 17, 2020, at 11.00 a.m.

To use our submission system, you have to register once (if you haven't an account already) - please register with your @student.akbild.ac.at email address to identify yourself as student. You can then log in with your access data, you CANNOT log in with the Akademie online password.

Jury, Awards, Procedure

The responsibility for the selection of the design concept to be realized rests with the Academy’s exhibition commission.

The winner(s) of the call will be notified in early May; the selected project will be awarded 1,000 euros.

A separate budget of 10,000 euros has been set aside for the implementation of the design concept. The budget includes material costs, the cost of any furniture purchased, and the cost of external labor for implementation. The implementation process will be supervised by the Academy’s exhibition staff and must be carried out in coordination with the GTB department as regards safety and fire protection requirements.

The Space

Plan: https://calls.akbild.ac.at

The approximately square space measures about 40 square meters and is oriented toward Getreidemarkt with three windows. It will be handed over in April 2020 after refurbishment. It will be furnished with a rail lighting system, a wooden floor, white walls, a partition wall in the rear part of the space (which is intended for projections but may also serve as a screen for small furniture stored behind it), as well as sun protection and roller blinds at the windows. If desired, furniture existing at the Academy (chairs, tables, etc.) can be used, but their availability must be checked in advance.

The space at Getreidemarkt 12 will be accessible for inspection to all interested parties in the presence of the architect on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at 3.00 p.m.
