    imaginarios materiales: Small Symposium on Art and Cultural Theories from Latin America

    Material imaginary worlds –imaginarios materiales– are effects of „collective aesthetics“. The influential Peruvian theorist Juan Acha (1916-1995) advocated placing them at the centre of all art and cultural studies. The symposium presents theses and research work that can be read in the context of this dictum. Various approaches to art and cultural theory from Latin America will be taken up and applied to different subject areas. All contributions are located in the context of dissertation projects at the IKW. In each case, the analytical perspective is also supported by a normative turn towards what Acha called an „independent visual culture“.

    Drawing Otherwise. Imagining Architectures, Sites, Places, Infrastructures and Landscapes.

    In order to build the world otherwise we need to learn how to draw otherwise. In order to draw otherwise we need to learn how to imagine otherwise. The symposium DRAWING OTHERWISE imagines architectures, sites, places, infrastructures and landscapes by un/doing, un/learning, un/seeing and un/drawing against and beyond existing conditions and wants to explore other possible futures of living together. Bringing together practitioners, theorists and scholars from architecture, visual culture, and art education the symposium explores the potential of articulating imaginaries based on solidarity, reciprocity, generosity, and empathy.

    AUTO¡STOP!: An Erasmus+ project

    After a successful project in 2024, Auto¡Stop! is now entering its second round – once again as part of an Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility project. The international research workshop brings together teachers and students from three different countries to jointly explore the possibilities that arise when cars disappear from public space.

  • Second Elfriede Mejchar Award for Photography

    The Elfriede Mejchar Award for Photography has been awarded for the first time on the occasion of Elfriede Mejchar's 100th birthday in 2024 as part of the commemorative exhibition that the Province of Lower Austria holded at the State Gallery of Lower Austria in Krems. After that, the prize will be awarded biennially until further notice.

    The color photograph shows four concrete sculptures in different shades of grey by Rouven Dürr, each composed of two to three cuboids. They stand on a simple table consisting of a wooden top and trestles. The studio wall in the background shows splashes of paint, the word “schauen” [look] written in delicate capitals is recognizable.
