Open access funding

As part of the institutional open access policy, the Academy supports its members in publishing their scholarly works and research findings open access by covering open access publishing costs, fully or in part.

  • The Academy Open Access Publishing Fund supports scholarly journal articles, contributions to edited volumes, and book publications.
  • For scholarly journal articles, as well as contributions to edited volumes with FWF project funding, you can apply for open access support through the FWF Open Access Block Grant.
  • In addition, the Academy provides financial support for printed copies of scholarly (open access) book publications (Going Book).

Open access in funded research projects

Different research funders have different guidelines for open access publishing. Whether your funder covers open access costs, or whether open access costs are included in your project budget depends on individual funding programs.

So, we suggest reviewing your funding agreement, as well as your funder’s open access policy. If still unsure, contact your funder directly to clarify any terms and requirements.

Further options for open access publishing

  • ART-Books: ART-Books, hosted and operated by arthistoricum.net (Specialized Information Service for Art, Photography, and Design), is an open access publishing platform, while also supporting self-archiving. Each work appears as a freely available online publication; copies of printed books are available on demand.
  • Open Research Europe: Open Research Europe (ORE), funded by the European Commission, is an open access publishing platform for research findings across all scholarly disciplines. ORE uses an open, transparent peer-review process for each submitted manuscript. Also, a copy of any publication on ORE is automatically deposited and archived in the open access repository Zenodo. Publishing on ORE is free of charge for researchers.
Throughout 2026, ORE will expand and provide its services also to researchers who have other fundings than from the European Commission. ORE’s infrastructure is provided and maintained by CERN.
