Aria Danaparamita: Architectures of Violence

How does border architecture inflict violence? In this aesthetic exploration of border architecture in the UK, this talk excavates the material and emotional terrains of migration. A screening of two short films invites the audience to inhabit the spaces that people who migrate move through in their journey to the UK. This will be followed by a talk on the UK's immigration landscape, arguing how violence is inflicted not just by the physical architecture of borders, detention, and deportation, but the emotional and psychological harms and traumas of navigating these experiences, reshaping our understanding of what we think of as architectures of violence. Situating these inquiries in our current political juncture, the event reflects on our collective responsibility in shaping a future otherwise.
Mita is a lens-based artist and campaigner who engages art as poetic resistance for collective liberation. Born in Indonesia and now living in the UK, their practice explores diasporic decolonialities, often through the lens of land, place, and belonging. Their process-led approach investigates the political intersections of archive, material culture, and colonial legacies. Mita received their BA from Wesleyan University, MA from SOAS University of London, and brings interdisciplinary background in research, policy, and journalism.
