Part of a lecture series with Prof Nombeko Mpako, University of South Africa (UNISA), Pretoria.

Prof. Mpako’s work bridges artistic practice, critical theory, and pedagogy, engaging with decolonial, indigenous and feminist perspectives within contemporary art and design. During her visit at IKL from 03 to 06 March 2026 she will offer three lectures and workshops as part of the Introduction to Gender Studies and for doctoral candidates. Her presentations focus on her research and personal journey in African feminisms, art and design education, and practice-led research.

Nombeko Mpako is an Associate Professor of Visual Arts, Practising Artist, Curator and an Academic Associate in the Department of Art and Music at the University of South Africa (UNISA).  She studied at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa where she obtained an Honours degree in Fine Arts and Higher Education teaching diploma. She further obtained Masters of Art and Design Education and a Doctor of Philosophy in Art Education at the University of New South Wales in Australia.  She has lectured on creative arts programmes at the undergraduate level and supervised and promoted several postgraduate students. She has moderated undergraduate programmes and served as an external examiner of postgraduate students at various South African, Continental, and international universities. She has peer-reviewed for several journals and conferences. Her research topics include African Art History and Culture, Visual/fine Art Practice-led research, Curriculum development, teaching and Learning methodologies, and the Professional Development of school teachers. She has presented at conferences, published papers, and participated in several exhibitions.
