Claude Lanzmann's film debut is one of the most remarkable contemporary historical documents about the state of Israel and its self-conception, its religious and political foundations and, above all, its citizens. They are the ones who speak: workers, intellectuals, members of the first generation of immigrants, young Israelis, new arrivals from the Soviet Union. Lanzmann traces the achievements and contradictions of an arising Israeli nation without any instructive commentary, without any propagandistic gestures or black-and-white painting, but with great sympathy and humor.
