The Architecture of Community – From Theory to Practice I

Course developed and conducted by students of IKA/Hof-Initiative with Hannes StiefelThe Architecture of Community – From Theory to Practice I+IIWhat does it mean to create commons? On basis of Hof-Initiative we will further transform the courtyard through lectures, talks, building workshops and get-togethers into a community space. The aim of “The Architecture of Community” is to engage with collaborative work in architecture both practically and theoretically. This includes learning spatial practices within a self-organized, non-hierarchical group working on the development of a community space. The course consists of two parts. The first part focuses on engaging with theory through the discussion and presentation of selected books, the organization of guest lectures, and other forms of coming together and collective learning. In the second part, this theoretical engagement is translated into practice through the further development, elaboration, and realization of a temporary pavilion for the courtyard at Schillerplatz.Participation is based on active involvement and self-initiated, collective work. Individual skills and responsibilities are brought into a shared working process. Taking responsibility for individual tasks as well as for the collective project is a fundamental aspect of the community and constitutes a central learning objective of the course.
