The Last Judgement Triptych by Hieronymus Bosch
A guided tour through ‘Heaven and Hell’
It is rare today – in the first half of the 21st century – for the work of a late Medieval painter to still fascinate or shock us. The Last Judgement Triptych by Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch, who lived and worked at the transition from the late Middle Ages to the Renaissance, is one such exception. The Triptych is on display in the Paintings Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and, alongside the Garden of Earthly Delights in the Prado in Madrid, is Bosch’s second largest painting and a masterpiece of art from around 1500 that remains a mystery in some respects to this day.
