Letters of condolences will be published here.

The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna bids a sad farewell to Andrei Siclodi, who passed away on August 18, 2025, in Hall in Tirol after a brief illness.

Andrei Siclodi studied art history and comparative literature in Innsbruck and was interested in forms of critical-emancipatory knowledge production in art and its relationship to other knowledge dispositives. Since 2002, he had been working for the Künstler*innen Vereinigung Tirol as director of the Künstler_innenhaus Büchsenhausen and founder and director of the international fellowship program for art and theory held there.

His dissertation at the academy, with the working title Critical-Emancipatory Art Practices and Institutions in Knowledge Capitalism, which incorporates many insights from his years of artistic and scientific practice, was nearing completion. He was unable to finish it.

Many artists, theorists, and curators associated with the academy, as well as his fellow doctoral students in philosophy, miss him deeply. His sharp analyses, his commitment, and his fighting spirit for the importance of art, culture, and science in society and for improving the conditions under which artists and theorists live will be sorely missed. He will be remembered for his publications, exhibitions, and texts, as well as for his cultural and socio-political activities.

Our sincere condolences go out to his family and all his loved ones. We wish them strength during this sad time.
