The Asia Pacific Artistic Research Network (APARN) Special Interest Group of the Society for Artistic Research invites proposals for presentations at its upcoming 2024 symposium, Art as Research: Methods for Synthetic Reasoning, hosted by the University of Cyberjaya, Malaysia.

The symposium aims to explore how we create order and meaning from the world around us, encompassing both passive and active forms of reasoning. They invite proposals that explore how art can generate new knowledge, challenge dominant narratives, and envision a better future by engaging with synthetic reasoning methodologies, where the truth of propositions emerges from their interaction with the world and the generation of novel properties through philosophical simulations (artworks).

Proposals are invited on topics that engage with:

  • Synthetic reasoning methodologies: How can artistic research practices utilize synthetic reasoning to generate new knowledge and understanding?
  • Emergent properties in art and technology: How do collaborations between art and technology produce unforeseen outcomes and possibilities?
  • Art as a site for critical inquiry: How can art challenge and reframe dominant narratives surrounding colonialism, capitalism, and the climate crisis?
  • Envisioning a better future: How can art and technology collaborations contribute to building more just and sustainable futures?

In addition to the above, they invite proposals engaging related themes such as: Cybernetics & Alien Intelligences, Sensations, Meaning & Existence, Time, Memory & Extinction, Immersion & Healing, Life & Afterlife, Coexistence, Autopoiesis, Unstable Identities, Virtual Bodies, Algorithms & Economies of Attention, Spirituality After Technology, Exploited Landscapes.
