Roland Rainer Symposium organized and curated by the Institute for Art and Architecture, Docomomo Austria and the ÖGFA.

The symposium in honor of Roland Rainer addresses three issues thatwere central to his practice and teaching of architecture and urbanism:How to look, How to see and How to be critical?
Rainer foughtmediocrity and forced the actors of our society to look at the worldwith hope. He viewed architecture as an enabling mechanism forimproving our habitat and looked to other cultures to enrich hiscapacity for designing critically. As architect and lifelong agentprovocateur, his vision for Vienna was radically modern. At the sametime, he fought environmental destruction, promoting sustainabilitylong before it became ubiquitous in architectural discourse. Bringingtogether speakers who seek alternate ways of looking at architecture, landscape, the city and cultural heritage, the symposium offers theopportunity to debate the state of today’s world. The symposium wouldlike to reconfirm the validity of criticality as one of the mostimportant drivers behind sustainability in architecture. Complementaryexcursions to selected buildings by Roland Rainer will offer thepossibility to experience and measure the timeliness of his concepts.

In the spirit of the breadth and reach of Roland Rainer’s work, thisseries of events is a collaborative effort between the Academy of FineArts Vienna (Institute for Art and Architecture and Alumni Club), theFederal Chamber of Architects and Chartered Engineering Consultants,Docomomo Austria and the ÖGFA. The symposium marks the inauguration ofthe Roland Rainer Chair at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, which ismade possible through the support of the City of Vienna.
