Call for participation to students from all institutes of the Academy!

This participatory project, Artist Lunch Box, initiated by the London-based curator Catherine Yuhui Li, is part of our Curatorial-in-Residence Programme* in partnership with the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Austrian Cultural Forum London and Central Saint Martins - University of Arts London.

Get ready to unpack lunch boxes prepared by London-based artists that are about to arrive at the Academy during Rundgang for a hands-on workshop. Submitted through an open call in London and transported to Vienna by the curator. These lunch boxes are not filled with sandwiches and snacks. Instead, each of them is a unique carrier for an individual artist’s everyday making materials, tools, artistic inspirations, thoughts, personal stories, and objects.

The workshop is set for an artistic exchange that crosses Vienna-London. You will receive a randomly distributed lunch box made by a total stranger. With provided art supplies on the communal ‘dining table’, you are invited to “enjoy” the lunch box in your hand—not through consumption but by remaking, repurposing, and reimagining the objects inside. Within the given tools, supplies, and timeframe, you have the freedom to use ANY available method and recourse (even beyond the dining table) to engage in any making/unmaking activities during the workshop.

After the workshop, the finished artworks will be carefully placed back into their original lunch boxes. These unique creations will then travel back to London, where they will be showcased at the Austrian Cultural Forum London (ACF) as part of an exhibition in June/July 2024. All participants, both from London and Vienna, will be duly acknowledged as authors of the exhibited artworks.

If you're curious about the intersection of art and everyday objects, join us in this unique collaboration.

 * The Curator-in-Residence Programme, in partnership between the Academy of Fine Arts with the Austrian Cultural Forum London and Central Saint Martins, University of Arts London, was initiated in 2015 and has brought together dozens of London and Vienna-based artists with upcoming curators. Graduates from the Culture, Criticism and Curation Master travel to Vienna and meet with graduates from the Academy to present them alongside UK-based artists at an exhibition at the ACF London.
