Theatrical release of Sugarland: Award-winning film by an Academy graduate

Sugarland, a film by Isabella Brunäcker, is currently being releasedin cinemas. Brunäcker is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In 2019, she received the Birgit Jürgenssen Prize. Fro Sugarland, she was awarded the Kodak Analog Film Prize at Diagonale 2025.

Iga, who recently broke up with her boyfriend, is traveling by car.
She travels from her Austrian homeland to Scotland, traveling along monotonous highways and through cheap hostels. Along the way, she picks up Ethan, an older Englishman who appears to be leading a precarious, unsettled life. After initial hesitation on both sides, the traveling companions slowly grow closer – until the film takes a surprising turn just before crossing the English Channel. [diagonale]

Isabella Brunäcker, born in 1984, lived and worked in Salzburg and London, and currently lives in Vienna. She studied English and American Literature in Salzburg, film at the Friedl Kubelka School, and fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In 2019, she received the Birgit Jürgenssen Prize and the Salzburg State Annual Film Scholarship.
