Independence and Self-Organization
The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is hosting an Erasmus Blended Intensive course including students from the University of Fine Arts Hamburg, Estonian Academy of Arts, and Malmö Art Academy which will involve interventions at the invitation of the Neuer Kunstverein Wien.
Independence and Self-Organization brings together students from different contexts, in a collaborative curatorial experiment at the Neuer Kunstverein Wien as part of the Independent Space Index festival, a city-wide Open House event, all participating spaces, including the NKW, will extend their opening hours and visitors are invited to view ongoing exhibitions and attend special events.
Independence and Self-Organization is an opportunity to learn by doing, within the context of the Independent Space Index Festival in Vienna, and Independent Synergies at the Neuer Kunstverein Wien.
The goal of this course is that it will foster interest and curiosity in independent thinking and collaborative work that is necessary for social engagement in artistic practices. The participants will engage in a broad, contextual learning experience and will have the opportunity to shift their ideas and expectations about what it is to leave the familiar ground of an educational setting. They will discover agency in peer to peer networks as an alternative or supplement to traditional validation methodologies of slow moving institutions or fast moving marketplaces. It will be a chance to take work out of the private space of the studio and see how it functions within a broader social network and how this experience in turn informs the private experience.
All events will take place in English language.

An early discussion at an Independent Space Index Stammtisch led to a proposal that Vienna’s independent scene could be considered a large and diverse intergenerational institution, presenting hundreds of exhibitions and projects per year, creating a responsive web of international networks.
Questions about the role of these small collaborative cultural initiatives run parallel to those of valuation of individual artistic effort. This gives us a clue to what the ‘mission’ of such a decentralized institution might be. What should strategies of re-presentation be, whether it be through festivals, joint exhibitions, institutional invitations, or historical analysis?

Opening Working Room
is a transmission of an exhibition currently on display at Asortymentna Kimnata, in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine, and a continuation of the discussion amongst the participants of the artist-initiated residency.
“It is important for us to work in Ukraine and, being inside, try to reflect on our artistic practice and consider different artistic strategies. One of the most visible approaches in the art of rapid response is to show the image of the victim or the winners. In this context, we think of alternative approaches, which include the actual role of art and the artist as a figure. One of the goals of the residency was to create new material objects that can testify in Ukraine and in the global context.”
