Christiane Gruber is a Senior Lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna at the Institute for Art Education in the field of Design in Context / Fashions & Styles, and a Lecturer at the University of Art and Design Linz in the Fashion & Technology / FAT program.
After studying fashion at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (among others with Raf Simons, Viktor & Rolf, and Jean-Charles de Castelbajac), she founded the label AWARENESS & CONSCIOUSNESS in 2005 – together with visual artist and Academy of Fine Arts graduate Anneliese Schrenk until 2007 – an artistic-experimental fashion project that she sees as a platform for reflective, decelerated design. Gruber’s works have received numerous awards and have been exhibited internationally.
Christiane Gruber works at the intersection of fashion, art, and lived mindfulness. In her textile practice, she combines philosophical reflection with artisanal precision and sustainable design. Her works emerge from a conscious, slowed-down process – situated between individual intimacy and collective responsibility, between textile object and wearable sculpture.
Her artistic research and teaching focus on themes such as material awareness, textile symbolism, sustainability, body politics, and the tension between individual design and social relevance.
As an educator, Christiane Gruber conveys a transdisciplinary perspective on textile art and fashion theory, with a focus on mindful design practice, critical thinking, and experimental engagement with material and form. Her approach combines artistic research with a deep understanding of the social and cultural dimensions of clothing.
