Clay Commons – Unearthing Urban Grounds (Vienna ↔ Bangkok)
A collaborative project by students and teachers from the Workshop for Molding and Casting Techniques at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the Ceramics Workshop, Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok.
What can materials tell us about the places they come from? And what emerges when different forms of knowledge, perception and craft practice come together?
Clay Commons – Unearthing Urban Grounds follows the traces of a material closely connected to the development of our cities. Urban clay is not only a natural resource, but is shaped by geological conditions as well as by social, economic, cultural and craft related dimensions. In Bangkok and Vienna, clays were collected, processed and documented. Engaging with the material led to encounters with places, modes of production, craft traditions and contemporary urban developments. Different perspectives from Fine Arts and Design came together, opening up diverse approaches to material, making, perception and design. These impressions and experiences are continued in individual works and a collective installation.
