Protest in cinema? Film the protest!
Part of FROG Kurzfilmprogramm. film resistance occupation grain. Curated by students of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (Class Analoger Film) in collaboration with sixpackfilm.
The short film program FROG follows the historical traces of political, activist and radical cinema in Austria in its various forms: loud with a megaphone or quietly at home, dancing in the streets or animating at the drawing board, collectively in a sit-in or alone on the prairie. Exactly 50 years after the Arena occupation—for many in Vienna, the countercultural starting point—old political struggles still feel relevant today. The program explores the role of filmmakers in these conflicts. Already iconic works by Valie Export and Ruth Beckermann are contrasted with contemporary films and 16mm footage shot specifically for the evening by students. The question on everyone’s mind: What exactly is a “Camera activa,” and what can it do?
With films from Sabine Derflinger, Ashley Hans Scheirl & Ursula Pürrer, Katharina Gruzei, Natalia del Mar Kasik, Valie Export, Maria Lassnig, Henry Hills, Franz Grafl, Josef Aichholzer, Ruth Beckermann, Tomash Schoiswohl
