The first edition of the Bourdieu Lectures will take place on 19–20 November 2025 at the Kunsthalle Bielefeld, under the title Gender – Domination – Visuality. This conference is a joint initiative by the University of Bielefeld,  Zeppelin University (Friedrichshafen), University of Education Freiburg and Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, in close cooperation with the Fondation Bourdieu.

At its core is Pierre Bourdieu’s photographic work from Algeria (1957–1961) and its relevance for current debates in gender studies, social and cultural theory, and post-/decolonial studies.

Keynotes, workshops and discussions will explore the continued significance of Bourdieu’s thinking at the intersection of body, power relations, and visibility.
The lectures are accompanied by the exhibition “Bourdieu’s Sociological Gaze” (15.11.2025 – 22.02.2026) at Kunsthalle Bielefeld.
