Payer Gabriel: Drawing as a Pluralistic Field of Experimentation between an Epistemic Form and an Autonomous Artistic Practice
Lecture with Payer Gabriel as part of the IBK Lecture Series, organized by Philip Patkowitsch, studio Art and Image | Graphic.
In our lecture, we examine the tension between drawing as an autonomous artistic practice and as a scientific mode of visualization and knowledge production. For us, drawing creates a space for thinking and reflection, in which culturally inherited systems of knowledge and the visual strategies that underpin them can be critically questioned. We bring these inherited forms of knowledge organization into dialogue with perspectives informed by critical posthuman thinking. Through selected bodies of work, we show how we engage, through drawing, with the tableau, inscriptions, trees of knowledge, and the still life as historically shaped forms of ordering, comparing, and inventorying.
