IKA: A Mobility in Malawi

Since 2023, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna has been cooperating with the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) within the framework of an Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility project.

Faculty members from the Academy have taught at MUBAS, and colleagues from MUBAS have also been hosted at the Academy. In the academic year 2024/25, seven architecture students from Malawi additionally completed an exchange semester in Vienna.

In February 2026 Luciano Parodi, Hannes Stiefel, Waltraud Indrist from the Institute for Art and Architecture of Academy of fine Art Vienna spent a week at the Architecture Department of MUBAS (Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences). During this time, the teachers co-taught with local colleagues, gave lectures, participated in discussion panels, and went on short excursions, guided by local students. In this way, the exchange was not only at faculty level; they spent a lot of time talking to and sharing experiences with students.

Overall, the week was very positive and inspiring, and it helped to bring both institutions closer. For the immediate future it is planned, that four students from Malawi come to the Academy for the winter semester 2026/27. Two teachers will join at the end of the term.
