  • Residency in Cairo 2026 awarded

    In collaboration with the Austrian Cultural Forum Cairo, the Federal Ministry for Housing, Arts, Culture, Media and Sport, and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, a residency in Cairo was announced for graduates of the Academy. We are pleased to announce that Marlene Coates has been invited to undertake the residency in Cairo in April and May 2026. Furthermore, in cooperation with PART – International Art Residency Austria, the Egyptian artist Omar Abd El-Baqi has been invited to complete a one-month residency in Vienna in February 2026.

  • Die Akademie gratuliert Natalia Gurova zum Miriam-Cahn-Stipendium

    Erst- und einmalig wird zugleich mit dem Oskar-Kokoschka-Preis auch das Miriam-Cahn-Stipendium verliehen. Miriam Cahn, die Schweizer Künstlerin, die 2024 mit dem Oskar-Kokoschka-Preis ausgezeichnet worden war, hatte ihr Preisgeld für ein Stipendium gestiftet, das einer bildenden Künstlerin, die soeben ihre Ausbildung abgeschlossen hat, für ein Jahr die Ausübung künstlerischer Tätigkeit ermöglichen soll. Aus je drei von der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien und der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien nominierten Alumnae aus dem Studienjahr 2024/25 wählte die Jury mit Natalia Gurova eine Künstlerin aus, deren Praxis sich an der Schnittstelle von Fiktion, Geschichte und sozialen Strukturen bewegt.

  • Demokratie leben: Winners to be featured on City Lights throughout Vienna starting in January

    The initiative of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and Gewista on digital advertising media in public spaces is entering its second round! From January 1 to February 2026, the six contributions of the winners will be featured on the City Lights around Vienna.

    The publication Cuaderno de tareas is the third volume in the Fine Companions series—a collaboration between the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and mit Mark Pezinger Books for the publication of design-oriented books.

  • University Library – Winter Break 2025/2026

    The University Library of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is on vacation. The Main Library and the Branch Library at the Institute for Education in the Arts will be closed from December 19, 2025 to January 6, 2026.

    Eine Gruppe von Lehrenden und Künstler_innen der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien hat kürzlich eine deutsch-nationale Jünglings-Skulptur des Bildhauers Josef Müllner in der Aula der Akademie abgenommen. Im Gespräch erklären Eduard Freudmann, Jakob Krameritsch und Ruth Sonderegger, was es mit dieser Weggestaltung“ auf sich hat. Und wie reibungslos der Übergang vom Austrofaschismus zum Nationalsozialismus an der Akademie war.

  • Academy awarded with the Internationalisation Award

    For the first time, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Women, Science and Research (BMFWF) and the Austrian Agency for International Cooperation in Education and Research (OeAD) are recognizing outstanding examples of the implementation of the National Higher Education Mobility and Internationalization Strategy 2030. We warmly congratulate our colleagues fromthe International Office on their first-place finish in the category Measures promoting mobility for underrepresented student groups!

  • Prizes for the Academy's Best Research Catalogue Expositions to Ingrid Cogne, Ana de Almeida und Zahra Khalid Mirza

    For the second time this year, the Prize for the Best Research Catalogue Expositions of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna was awarded by an international jury. Three published contributions from the years 2024 and 2025 were honoured. The award ceremony took place on 12 November 2025 as part of the Academy's Research Day. Congratulations to the prize winners!

    We are pleased to announce the participants selected for the Mentoring Program Art 2025/26! We look forward to the collaboration within the tandems and wish all participants an inspiring and successful program year.

  • Kunsthalle Wien Prize 2025: Exhibition by Jonida Laçi and Luīze Nežberte

    The Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz opens its winter program with an exhibition by Jonida Laçi (born 1990, Durrës, Albania) and Luīze Nežberte (born 1998, Riga, Latvia), recipients of the 2025 Kunsthalle Wien Prize. Established in 2002, the prize is organized in collaboration with the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. The award aims to foster a new generation of artists and annually recognizes outstanding graduate projects working with diverse media and themes. Laçi and Nežberte will have a joint exhibition at the Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz, accompanied by an exhibition catalog in German and English, and will each receive €3,000 in prize money. The exhibition was curated by Anna Marckwald and Hannah Marynissen.

  • Naakpɛɛi Ni Nmaa Wolo – Wunderblock – 魔術板

    The Summer School 2025 under the motto "Naakpɛɛi Ni Nmaa Wolo /Wunderblock/ 魔術板" was the meeting of three art universities from Africa, Asia and Europe from September 22 to 28, 2025 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. It continued the collaboration that was successfully launched in 2024 at the CAA Hangzhou under the title Traces.
