The Research Cluster | Digital Cultures invites you to a talk by the new Professor for Postdigital Art, Claudia Larcher.

The digital is no longer a special case. Images are produced, circulated and viewed through computational systems as a matter of course, and “digital art” has stopped describing anything in particular. Post-digital names this situation. The tools have become so ordinary that asking whether a work is digital tells us little. What matters is what the work does with that ordinariness. In her lecture Claudia Larcher sets out a position for the new professorship of Post-digital Art at the Institute of Fine Arts. She uses the term as a working concept and asks what it changes in practice, for how works are made and shown, and for how art is taught at an art university. One example runs through the lecture: her own work with AI as a tool for reinterpreting (art) history.

Claudia Larcher, born in Bregenz in 1979, is an artist and experimental filmmaker based in Vienna who studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. From photographic fragments of architecture, landscapes and bodies, which she dissects, mirrors, rescales and montages, she has developed her own visual language in which still images become fictional camera movements; in recent works she extends this through algorithmic animation and immersive installations that interweave the analogue and the digital. Her artistic research centres on the materiality of the digital and on how algorithmic image production shapes our perception of reality, and her work has been shown at Anthology Film Archives in New York, Ars Electronica in Linz, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and Manifesta 13, among others. Her awards include the Kunsthalle Wien Prize (2008), the Outstanding Artist Award for Video and Media Art (2016) and the Austrian Art Prize for Artistic Photography (2023). After teaching as Senior Lecturer in the TransArts class at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (2021–2023), she became Professor of Post-digital Art at the Institute for Fine Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna on 1 October 2026.
